Epilepsy Awareness and Administration of Buccal Midazolam Course

This is a 6-hour training course, with certificates valid for two years in line with recommendations from the Joint Epilepsy Council (JEC).

The course provides an in-depth understanding of different types of epilepsy and seizures, as well as the use of Buccal Midazolam as a treatment. It also covers important topics such as dosage, administration, side effects, record keeping, and aftercare.

Buccal Midazolam is an effective alternative to rectal diazepam and acts as a relaxant to help control certain types of seizures. We also offer an Epilepsy Awareness and Administration of Rectal Diazepam course for those who require additional training.

According to the Joint Epilepsy Council’s (JEC) Training Standards for the Administration of Buccal Midazolam:

“Assessment of Learning

There are recognised challenges in assessing the knowledge and skills of participants trained in the administration of Buccal Midazolam. As this is an emergency procedure, it is often not possible for training providers to assess participants carrying out the procedure in real situations.

Employers are therefore encouraged to ensure appropriate assessment takes place. Good practice includes the following:

• During the course, the training provider confirms learning through supervision and simulation using a volunteer, with water substituted for medication.

• Certificates of attendance should only be issued once the trainer is satisfied that learning outcomes have been met.

• Following the course, participants should be assessed through questioning (oral or written) and case studies.

• Employers should then arrange for the participant to observe the procedure being carried out by an experienced, trained member of staff, and to be supervised on at least their first occasion administering Buccal Midazolam.”*

At ProTrainings, we follow these guidelines by delivering both theoretical and practical training through simulation and demonstration. On completion, participants receive a certificate and have access to download a CPD credit time statement as supporting evidence.

Following the course, the participant (or another suitably qualified member of staff) should be observed and signed off as competent after administering Buccal Midazolam in a real situation.
